During the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, the lines between gay, bisexual, and transgender communities blurred out of necessity. Trans women were dying at alarming rates, often denied healthcare because hospitals did not know how to treat their bodies. Simultaneously, trans men were often invisible in lesbian feminist spaces. However, the collective trauma of watching friends die while the government did nothing created a unified front. ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and other direct-action groups featured trans leaders, proving that the fight for biological survival was a shared fight.
