The story begins on the banks of the Danube, where a small-time hustler named Matko and his son Zare hatch a plan for a major score: they intend to steal an entire train of smuggled fuel. To fund this heist, Matko seeks a loan from the old gangster Grga Pitić. However, this puts them in the crosshairs of the much more dangerous and volatile gangster Dadan Karambolo, who swindles Matko and leaves him deeply in debt.
