Alternatively, go to your Purchased tab (App Store > Account > Purchased). Find GarageBand in the list. If you see a cloud icon with a down arrow, you are eligible. If you see "GET" or a price, you have never claimed it—you must first claim the modern version on a newer Mac to attach it to your ID.
