By comparing thousands of stories from different times and cultures—from the ancient epics of Gilgamesh and the Argonauts to Buddhist and Hindu tales—Campbell discovered a fundamental underlying structure. This "monomyth," as he called it, describes a cyclical process: a hero ventures out from the ordinary world into a supernatural realm, faces decisive trials, and returns home transformed, bearing a gift or "elixir" for their community.
