Research from industrial cybersecurity firm Dragos has documented a widespread ecosystem where malicious actors distribute "cracked" or "password-cracking" tools for industrial software. One notable case involved a password "cracking" tool for PLCs that not only failed to crack the password as advertised but instead exploited vulnerabilities to retrieve credentials. Even worse, the tool was found to install the Sality malware, which turns infected computers into nodes in a peer-to-peer botnet used for cryptocurrency mining and launching further cyberattacks.
