Following the leak of the videos, Devanathan was suspended by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and subsequently arrested by the police.

Devanathan evaded the police for over a month, going into hiding with his family and even moving the Madras High Court to seek anticipatory bail.
