When Refused recorded The Shape of Punk to Come in a remote Swedish studio, they were a band in crisis. The Swedish hardcore scene had grown stale, and vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist Kristofer Steen, and their bandmates were ingesting everything from free jazz to techno to the abrasive electronics of Aphex Twin.
