The transgender community is not a subcategory of LGBTQ culture; it is a vital, irreplaceable engine of that culture. The struggle for transgender dignity—the right to exist, to be seen, to receive healthcare, and to walk the streets without fear—is the same struggle for liberation that has animated queer resistance for over a century. To be LGBTQ in the 21st century means to understand that the fight for the "T" is the fight for the whole.
