Schools close for Hari Raya , Chinese New Year , Deepavali , Christmas , Gawai (Harvest Festival in Sarawak), and Kaamatan (Sabah). During "Karnival Perpaduan" (Unity Carnival), a Muslim student will show a non-Muslim how to wear a sampin , and a Chinese student will teach a Malay how to hold chopsticks.
When the final bell rings at 1:30 p.m. (shorter for primary, longer for secondary), students pour out—some to tuition, some to sports practice, some to help at family stalls. They carry heavy bags but also something intangible: an everyday, unforced multiculturalism that no textbook can teach.
