The film's story revolves around Avadh (played by Naseeruddin Shah), a sage who performs a havan to appease the gods and secure a house for his children. However, things take a dark turn when Manjulika, Avadh's daughter, driven by a desire for revenge against her family, gets trapped inside a pillar of the havan. The house, subsequently built on that site, becomes a haunted abode, and years later, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav (played by Akshay Kumar) and his wife, Aarti (played by Vidya Balan), move in, hoping to start a new life.
